SUMMARY

Larry D. Olson, P.E., President and Principal Engineer of Olson Engineering, Inc. and Olson Instruments, Inc. (located in Wheat Ridge, Colorado) will speak on NDE of Civil Structures at the ASNT February 13th meeting. The presentation will cover case histories for condition evaluation of buildings, bridges, dams, pavements and other structures. Such NDE methods as Impact Echo, Spectral Analysis of Surface Waves, Sonic Echo/Impulse Response, Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity, Crosshole Tomography, Parallel Seismic and Ground Penetrating radar will be discussed. Materials that will be discussed include concrete, asphalt, stone/masonry, steel and wood. The case histories will include NDE results from a condition evaluation of the concrete and Colorado Yule marble (from Marble, Colorado) that were used to build the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Olson founded Olson Engineering in 1985 to provide specialized consulting engineering and research services for NDE, vibration and geophysical engineering investigations of civil structures. Olson Engineering has conducted projects across the U.S. and internationally as well. He founded Olson Instruments in 1995 which manufactures instruments and tools for NDE, vibration and geophysical measurements. Olson Instruments has sold its Freedom NDT PC line of instruments in over 20 countries around the world and introduced the first concrete thickness gauge, the CTG–1, last year. Mr. Olson serves as a course instructor for the American Society of Civil Engineers in a continuing education short course entitled "Structural Condition Assessment of Existing Structures". The course is taught nationally and internationally, and it will be held March 8-9, 2001 in Denver.
