Mr. Joseph L. Mackin


Past, Present and Future Changes in ASNT

About the Speaker:

Joseph L. Mackin has been involved in nondestructive testing since 1978, when he began work at Baker Tubular Services and became their training manager in 1979. In 1991, he became the Executive Director of the International Pipe Inspectors Association (IPIA), a position that he still holds. IPIA provides training for companies involved in the nondestructive testing of pipe used in oil wells.

Mackin is currently serving the society as ASNT’s Vice-President, member of the Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and Constitution and Bylaws Committee. His past national level involvement in ASNT includes serving as: Chair of the Education and Qualification Council; Chairman of the Business and Finance Committee; a Division Manager of the Certification Management Council; and a member of the SNT-TC-1A revision committee and interpretation committee. Mackin was a contributor to the Nondestructive Testing Handbook, Third Edition: Volume 2, Liquid Penetrant Testing and to the second edition: Volume 8, Visual and Optical Testing. At the local level, he is a past chair of the Greater Houston Section.

He has a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of Houston at Clear Lake and holds an ASNT Level III certificates in five methods.

Mackin is also involved in committee work for the American Petroleum Institute. He is a member of Resource Group on NDT for Committee 5 and a member of the Committee on Drilling and Servicing Equipment. He is the project leader for the development of an ISO standard on the inspection of used drill pipe and bottom hole assemblies. Joe is also a voting member of several ASTM technical committees.

Prior to becoming involved in nondestructive testing, Joe had nine years of leadership experience as an US Army officer, completing Airborne and Ranger schools. He served a tour in Vietnam.
