A Short History of Aviation

ABSTRACT:

During 2003, we celebration the 100th Anniversary of the Wright Brothers first flight. This was a major technical contribution to our modern world. Some aspects of the Wright Brothers success will be discussed along the evolution of the airplane and the outstanding contributors to that evolution. Most of you are familiar with some of the major successes and advancement of airplanes. You many not know about some of the peculiar aircraft and failures the occurred during airplane and aerospace developments. Some of the most interesting were produced by Glenn L. Martin, who was a pioneer in the aircraft business and the founder of the Company that is now Lockheed Martin. The local Martin plant was built in Denver in 1956 and remains as one of the premium producers or space products. Since this is an ASNT meeting, some of the major contributors to development of NDT technology who contributed to aircraft development will be recognized.

About the Speaker:

Ward Rummel is retired from Lockheed Martin (35) years and is an avid aviation history buff. His contributions to NDT technology are well known and he was recognized by the United States Air Force, in December 2003, by award of the John W. Lincoln Gold Medal for lifetime achievement and contributions to aircraft structural integrity and safety. He was awarded the Robert C. McMaster, Gold Medal by the American Society for Nondestructive Testing in 2002.
