Speakers: Sharon I. Vukelich


Will be speaking on Engine Life Extension through the use of NDE. Discussing how requirements are set by the engine structures engineers and the need for close coordination between them and the NDT personnel. Included will be discussion on the dilemma between the technical requirements and the capability and reliability of NDE processes. A 9 minute video of the Turbine Engine Sustainment Initiative (TESI) automated robotic UT system developed at UDRI for engine inspection will be shown.

About the Speaker:

Ms. Vukelich has been a member of ASNT since approximately 1984. Prior to 1992, she was only involved in the Miami Valley Chapter.  She is the President of the Society, as well as a member of the Technical & Education Council, the Research Council and SOC. She has held the following positions of the Technical Council and now the Technical & Education Council and in the Society:  Board of Director, Chairman and Vice-Chairman/Secretary of the T & E Council, Vice-Chairman and Secretary of the Technical Council, Industrial/Transportation Division Chair, Chairman, and Vice-Chairman of the Aerospace Committee of the Technical Council.

Ms. Vukelich is presently a Research Engineer at the University of Dayton Research Institute. At the University she is working with aging aircraft and propulsion systems and nondestructive evaluation/inspection, and continues as a leading expert on the USAF Structural Integrity Program for Propulsion systems. Ms. Vukelich retired in Jan 2003 after 21 years as a civilian with the USAF. She retired as the Chief of the Advanced Engine Projects Integrated Product Team at Wright-Patterson AFB. In this capacity, she managed 19 engineers. Her office was responsible for propulsion, structures and NDE support for all fielded engines, which includes cost trades as well as design and safety of propulsion engines/systems. Prior to this she was the Technical Expert for Propulsion Structures and NDE.

Ms. Vukelich has co-authored a book titled "Fatigue Crack Measurement: Techniques and Applications," and numerous technical papers on life management methodologies, fracture mechanics, and nondestructive evaluation/inspection. She has been a co-lecturer for the B. H. Goethert Aeropropulsion Short Course given by The University of Tennessee Space Institute.

Ms. Vukelich has a BS in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan and an MS in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Cincinnati. She has worked as an Aerospace Engineer for over 31 years. She has been with UDRI for 3 years. She was previously with the USAF for 21 years and General Electric, Jet Engine Division, for the prior 7 13/24 years

From Pueblo:
                 From I-25, take the Lincoln Ave exit - Exit 193.
                 Turn left (west) into E Lincoln Ave.
                 Go over the freeway to the next trafic light.
                 Turn right (north) to Park Meadows Dr.; Drive 1.2 miles;
                 the road will curve to the left (~west).
                 The restaurant is on the right.
